Suspended Sentence in Money Laundering Case

Money Laundering Case Result

"Never lend your bank card. Not even to a friend."

This week we concluded a money laundering case that began with exactly that mistake. Two clients lent their bank cards to a friend, who used their accounts to receive stolen funds. Under Hong Kong law, that was enough for a serious charge which routinely ends in immediate imprisonment.
Our clients understood the gravity of their error from the outset. They were even prepared to pay compensation in full. What they needed was for the court to see who they were beyond one lapse of judgment.
Counsel Mr James McGowan delivered excellent mitigation, and the court imposed a suspended sentence. Both clients now have a genuine second chance to resume their lives.
Results like this are never one person's work. Our CHAUDHRY M. Kamran had excellent assistance from Soumya Jain and Simran Sajhwani in the preparation of the mitigation bundle and timely coordination with the defendants and their families. It was this coordinated effort that made this outcome possible.

A word to the public, because we see this pattern far too often: your bank account is not something to share. "I was only helping a friend" is not a defence to money laundering in Hong Kong. If someone asks to borrow your card or account, say no.
